Rock Bar, Bali

The Ayana Resort and Spa hosts one of the most romantic and stunning bars in the region. Already a breathtaking hotel with it's endless pools and gardens over looking the Indian Ocean the Rock Bar is a testament of class and taste. Look i know I'm a Happy Hour clown who spends more time in dodgy bars but you gotta give credit its due. Since I want to pamper my staff a little I bring them here for happy hours and to catch the sun set.

We take the lift/mini tram down the cliff to the tastefully designed grounds of the Rock Bar. The sun is setting to the West. It is hot and humid but your heart DOES beat just that little faster. The view is breathtaking and the music from some Cafe Del Mar CD pulses from below, it's bass throbbing in the humid evening air. Spread before us is the Indian Ocean, some parts glowing gold in the slowly declining sunlight. The crowd before and after us speak in hushed tones, our shared awe keeping the moment almost in a state of reverence. Sure it's a strong first impression and by the time you leave the Rock Bar your feeling would be more 'cool bar' then 'awesome shit ass fantastic ejaculation of love' but its that first moment when you peer over the lift/ tram railing, an ever so slight breeze caresses your face as you look upon a chic bar on the edge of a cliff as azure clear waters beat against sandy colored rocks that the experience is etched in your mind a little deeper than the shite hole that Kuta can be (or is slowly transforming itself to be).

We had to queue up for about 20 minutes as the lift only accommodates 5 people at a time and the crowd had already built up. The wait is restless but we occupy our time by taking pictures of the bar below us and the ocean before us. The bar opens officially from 5pm to 1am.

The place is full when we get there and are ushered politely to the 'waiting' area. We're happy as it is - the waiting area is stocked with bar tables, 3 sets of low tables on a sandy cliff. For all we care we are already at the Rock Bar. The sun sets in front of us as our cold Bintang Beer arrives. Peekz gets a fruity anti-oxidant watchacalllit. Pregnancy agrees with her. Her beer cravings have all but disappeared. I've lost another drinking buddy...

Behind us the crowd settles down to watch the sun set. We are still in the holding area.

We dont care. The dying embers of the setting sun starts to warm up the heavens. We of course order our third round of beers just to enjoy this moment.

We finally get out table. Yeah these pictures are blur but just to give you an idea of what it's like. Those silhouettes are my staff.

The music continues. The staff light up the fire torches and tea lights. Tell me its not perfect. See that sun set in the back ground of the crappy photo above?

The crowd that arrived to see the sunset has long since thinned. We order the chicken pop corn and some other dish (only snacks available) and as with all things Balinese - ORDER their awesome local chili sauce! Perfect with beer!

Bali is indeed the playground for the rich. We will never see this in Malaysia. The vision and investment is just not there. So for the time being I'll have to find my perfect moments away from my own home.

Quick Facts - The Rock Bar is in the Ayana Resort and Spa. About 15 minutes from Nusa Dua and about 15 minutes from the airport. Its actually in between both Jimbaran Beach and Nusa Dua. Drinks are expensive - basically 5 star hotel prices - about USD 8-10 for a beer. The service is excellent though. Bali as always is humid so ladies feel free to wear as little as decently possible. Fat men with the belly's of pregnant whales stay home. The lift can't take your weight Especially you, yes YOU with the hairy back. What? What? It's nothing? Is that hair or is that just a Wookie hiding behind your collar?
